La casa de tres apartamentos es una reconstrucción. Las dos plantas originales han sido adaptadas conservando la distribución y se ha añadido una tercera planta que varía levemente albergando una amplia sala de estar. La vieja escalera de madera y los baños originales fueron eliminados.

The industrial area of Siegen is situated about 100km south of Dortmund in between Westerwald and Sauerland. It belongs to the oldest iron processed regions in Europe. Due to economic reasons emerged towards the end of the 19th century a timber-framed method of construction, which broke through the medieval timber-frame tradition with poulent usage of material and ornaments. A simple house type with proportions deriving from classicism.

The specific character of this timber-frame was also used in the Ruhr Basin for a great variety of construction jobs. Our suggestion for the reconstruction of the Klenke Apartement Building is based on the artistic principles and thoughts of this long-forgotten type of building.

On a road, which shows the block structure, which is typical for the suburbs of Dortmund, a two-floor apartement building was reconstructed and extended by another floor. The two existing floors had to be adapted to contemporary living comfort and kept their ground plan disposition to the greatest possible extent. The newly arranged upper floor received a slightly varying ground plan layout including an open living area. Situated on the gable wall, the core of the development with ist old wooden staircase and toilet areas were completely removed and replaced by a ferroconcrete staircase with a light well. While the light well is used for illumination, attaching it with pictures turns it into an art well. The building holds horizontal, large window openings and offers framed views over the surrounding buildings.

With ist traditional roofshape and the simple cubic stature, the new house, apparently seamlessly, forms a line with the typology of the quarter. At the same time this existing image is put into question: The new building shell comes across as a coloured block, whose lively floated coat-surface changes in the light, as if it was almost the appearance of a huge stone block. The interaction of tradition and reduction causes an overlay of the different images of the house and dissolves the appearance of the past days towards the neighbouring building development. The classicism-effect was caused by the built-in flap tile and the tilt-angle of the roof. The fact that the building is situated next to a gateway with delivery yard, makes it look urbanistic concerning the front- and gable view.

Das Siegener Industriegebiet liegt etwa 100 km südlich von Dortmund zwischen Westerwald und Sauerland. Es gehört zu den ältesten eisenverarbeiteten Regionen Europas. Gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhundert entstand dort aus ökonomischen Gründen eine Fachwerkbauweise, die die mittelalterliche Fachwerktradition mit reichlicher Verwendung von Material und Zierrat durchbrach. Ein einfacher Haustyp mit klassizistischen Maßverhältnissen.

Auch im Ruhrgebiet fand der spezifische Charakter dieses Fachwerks für die verschiedensten Bauaufgaben Verwendung. Unser Vorschlag für die Sanierung des Klenke Apartment Building basiert auf den gestalterischen Grundsätzen und Gedanken dieses längst vergessenen Gebäudetyps.

An einer Straße, die die für die Dortmunder Vorstadt typische Blockrandbebauung aufweist, wurde ein zweigeschossiges Mehrfamilienhaus saniert und um ein Geschoß erweitert. Die beiden bestehenden Etagen waren heutigem Wohnkomfort anzupassen und behielten ihre Grundrissdispositionen weitestgehend bei. Die darüber liegende neue Etage erhielt einen leicht variierenden Grundrisszuschnitt mit einem offenen Wohnbereich. Der an der Giebelwand liegende Erschließungskern mit seiner alten Holztreppe und Toilettenanlagen wurde gänzlich entfernt und durch eine Stahlbetontreppe mit Lichtschacht ersetzt. Während der Lichtschacht zur Belichtung dient, wird er sogleich durch die Belegung mit Bildern zu einem Kunstschacht. Das Bauwerk hat horizontale große Fensteröffnungen und bietet gerahmte Blicke auf die umliegenden Gebäude.

Mit seiner traditionellen Dachform und der einfachen kubischen Gestalt reiht sich das neue Haus scheinbar nahtlos in die Typologie des Quartiers ein. Gleichzeitig wird dieses bestehende Bild in Frage gestellt: Die neue Gebäudehülle wirkt wie ein farbiger Klotz, dessen Oberfläche aus lebhaften Glattputz sich im Licht verändert, als wäre sie bald das Erscheinungsbild eines riesigen Steinblocks. Im Zusammenspiel aus Tradition und Reduktion überlagern sich die verschiedenen Bilder vom Haus und lösen das Erscheinungsbild vergangener Tage gegenüber der Nachbarbebauung auf. Die klassizistische Wirkung ergab sich durch den eingebauten Kniestock und den Neigungswinkel des Dachs. Der Umstand, dass das Gebäude neben einer Einfahrt mit Anlieferungshof steht, lässt es mit Front- und Giebelansicht städtebaulich wirken.
